A deck in Appleton lives a hard life. It bakes in July, sheds rain through the fall, carries snow and ice for months, and then thaws into a wet spring. Whatever you build has to survive that cycle year after year — which is why the material conversation matters more here than in milder parts of the country.
Composite vs. wood: the upkeep difference
Pressure-treated wood is the lowest-cost way to get a deck built. It is also the highest-effort way to own one. Wood is porous and organic, so it absorbs moisture, and Wisconsin's freeze-thaw cycle drives that moisture in and out of the boards repeatedly. Over time that produces the familiar list: cupping, splintering, popped fasteners, gray fading, and a required cleaning-and-sealing routine every year or two.
Capped composite and PVC boards are engineered differently. A wood-and-polymer or all-PVC core is wrapped in a protective cap that resists moisture, stains, fading, and scratching. In practice, ongoing maintenance becomes sweeping and an occasional soap-and-water wash. No sanding, no staining, no sealing.
- No annual stain or seal cycle, which is the single biggest lifestyle difference.
- Color is engineered in rather than applied on top, so fading is far slower and far more even.
- No splinters — relevant if the deck is used barefoot around a pool or by kids.
- Boards are dimensionally stable, so hidden-fastener systems stay tight and the surface stays flat.
The honest trade-off: composite costs more up front than pressure-treated lumber. What you are buying is the elimination of a recurring maintenance obligation and a much longer service life, backed by manufacturer warranties.

Understanding the TimberTech and AZEK tiers
We build primarily with TimberTech and AZEK. At a high level, the lineup sorts into three tiers, and knowing which one you are looking at prevents a lot of confusion when comparing quotes.
Entry capped composite
A wood-composite core with a protective cap, typically capped on three or four sides. This is the accessible entry into low-maintenance decking. It performs dramatically better than wood while keeping cost closer to it.
Premium capped composite
Same basic construction with a more refined cap, richer multi-tone graining, better fade and stain performance, and longer warranty coverage. This is where most homeowners land — it looks convincingly like hardwood at conversational distance.
AZEK capped polymer (PVC)
No wood content at all. An all-PVC board is the lightest, most moisture-immune, and coolest-underfoot option in the lineup, with the strongest warranties. It is the top tier and priced accordingly. For poolside decks and heavily exposed surfaces, it is usually worth the conversation.
The tier you choose changes the surface. The framing, drainage, and detail work underneath it are what determine whether the deck is still flat in ten years.
What actually drives your cost
We do not publish dollar figures, because a deck price that is not based on your specific site is not a price — it is bait. What we can do is tell you exactly which decisions move the number, so you can steer your own budget:
- Square footage. The largest single driver, and roughly linear.
- Height off grade. A ground-level deck is far simpler than an elevated one requiring taller posts, beams, and code-compliant guardrails.
- Railing. Often a surprising share of the total. Composite, aluminum, and cable systems differ substantially in cost per linear foot.
- Stairs. Every run adds framing, treads, risers, footings, and railing — stairs are disproportionately expensive per square foot.
- Shape. Rectangles are efficient. Angles, curves, picture framing, inlays, and multi-level layouts add labor and waste.
- Substructure. Steel framing or a full under-deck drainage system costs more and lasts longer.
- Site conditions. Access, grading, soil, and whether an existing deck has to be demolished and hauled away.
- Extras. Integrated lighting, benches, planters, and privacy screening.
One thing we always recommend against economizing on: the frame and the footings. Footings must reach below the frost line, and the framing layout should match the board manufacturer's span requirements — including tighter spacing if you are running boards diagonally. A premium surface on an under-built frame is money spent in the wrong place.
